An Unforgettable Sunset On An Old Runway

cocolimeandlove-photoshoot
A few weeks ago two photographers reached out to us through Instagram, saying they would like to do a shoot with us. Their message was so sweet and their Instagram account so beautiful, that we had a very good feeling about this photo shoot.
We decided to ignore the fact that we feel super awkward in front of cameras. Mimi genuinely hates being photographed, or even worse, being filmed, and I feel just like an idiot having no idea what to do with my face… my hands… and my whole body.

Photo shoot at the aircraft

Less than a week later, they were having doing a wedding shoot in Berlin. We decided to meet during that weekend. We agreed that they should choose the location, and it happened to be at the Tempeflhofer Feld. For all the non-Berliners out there; it is an abandoned airport that is now used as a park where people are free to hang out, run, bike, and grill.

One bottle wine later

We met at the park in the early evening, and started discussing everything while sharing a bottle of wine. It could have been weird because they were total strangers to us, but we really clicked immediately! These adorable ladies were Maria and Linda. They were super easy going and funny, and as the bottle became emptier, we were getting more and more excited for the upcoming photo-shoot.

Go time

The four of us chatted until sunset, and then it came time to forget about being camera-shy. It was also time to ignore all the other park-goers. And then, guess what? Magic happened! We didn’t feel awkward at all and we totally forgot about the bystanders. It was just the two, oh right… four of us in the park. The sky was gorgeous, the city calm, love was in the air, and everything just felt natural.

We did it

Once the session was over, we unfortunately said our goodbyes, but what a fantastic feeling! We put ourselves out there and felt strong and proud about it. What is there to be proud of? We faced our fears and stepped out of our comfort zones.

A lot of delicious hot drinks like matcha or beetroot latte, delicious coffee, smoothie & smoothie bowls and healthy snacks. They also have a daily changing lunch- you can find the weekly menu on their website.

Our favorite item to start the day is the maca power up smoothie bowl made out of banana, peanut, maca, dates, ground coffee, coconut rice milk and topped with a super delicious homemade granola.

Where? Brunnenstraße 24

When? Mo-Friday from 7:30-7:30pm, Saturday 9am-2pm, Sunday 11am-3pm.

3) Haferkater

This café specializes in Scottish porridge and is heaven for a comfy breakfast with friends. Especially during Autumn or Winter when the weather in Berlin is dark and freezing. The base of the porridge is always vegan, only some toppings are not. You can choose to have nuts, granola, fresh fruit, stewed fruit, coconut, berries, seeds… My favorite one is “the Naschkater”. Why? Just close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine a hot bowl warming your hands on a cold grey morning… the pieces of dark chocolate melting on your warm porridge… the banana slices dancing with the maple sirup… I’m sure you understand me! If you’re more in lunch mode you can also order salads and soups. They have different hot drinks and delicious Ethiopian coffee from the Berlin Coffee Circle.

Where? Two different locations.

The small and cosy one, in Friedrichshain : Boxhagener Str. 76-78
Mo-Fr: 07:00-16:00 Sa-So: 08:00-17:00

The new and bigger one, in Prenzlauerberg: Eberswalder Straße 26
Mo-Fr: 07:00-18:00 Sa-So: 08:00-19:00

4) Brammibal’s donuts

You can’t visit Berlin without visiting Brammibal’s! This donuts place in the heart of Neukölln Maybachufer* is a super cosy location where everyone can find a little something for themself. Like we personally don’t eat donuts… So why would we have the crazy idea to put a donut place in our top 10 list when Berlin has many other cool cafés to offer? The atmosphere is nice, the staff are welcoming, the choice of plant-based milk is large, the coffee is delicious. They are making everything by hand, all 100% vegan, without any artificial additives. There are so many flavors of donuts and all so mouthwatering. For example, chocolate toasted coconut, caramel hazelnuts, espresso, pumpkin cream cheese, white chocolate pistachio, chocolate peanut butter fudge & caramel, and a lot more.

When? Every day from 10am to 6pm

Where? Maybachufer 8

*don’t miss the great Turkish market at the same spot every Wednesday and Friday

5) Daluma

Daluma is not a fully vegan café but has a lot of vegan and raw options. You have a large list of superfood smoothies and cold pressed juices but also good breakfast and lunch options. The atmosphere is cosy and trendy, the staff nice, the products fresh, organic and tasty.

Where? Weinbergsweg 3

When? Mo-Fr from 8am to 8pm, Saturday from 10:00 to 7pm, Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

6) Maison Han

This Vietnamese café in the heart of Neukölln isn’t vegan but has great vegan options, because you know…that’s Berlin! This charming place serves good coffee, fresh salads, tasty starters & yummy desserts. We loved the Bahn Cuon Vegan: steamed rice crêpes stuffed with tofu, shiso, mint, onion and coriander. Something to drink with that? The matcha coconut milk!

Where? Pannierstraße 40

When? Mo-We-Th-Fr-Sat-Su 10pm-8pm. Closed the Tuesdays.

7) Kaffee 9

Located next to the great Markhalle 9 (see the Thursday street food market in our top 10 places to eat in Berlin here) this coffee roastery is definitely a strategic place to visit! They serve a delicious coffee and use the Oatly brand of oat milk, if you’re up for a vegan cappuccino or latte. The atmosphere and charming decoration makes this place one of our favorite cafés to enjoy a morning or afternoon date while exploring the area of Kreuzberg.

Where? Eisenbahnstr. 43

When? Mo-Tue-Wed-Fr 7:30-6pm, Thursday 7:30-9pm, Sat. 7:30am-7pm and Sunday 10am-6pm.

8) Goldhahn & Sampson

More a delicatessen than a real Café, Goldhahn & Sampson still have some tables to calm down and enjoy a great coffee with some treats you just found in the shop. They use the barista edition of Oatly oat milk and that’s definitely a plus. They have a large choice of cookbooks from all over the world, all the spices and chocolates you could ever dream of and they regularly host some awesome cooking courses.

Where? Two branches in town, one in Charlottenburg: Wilmersdorfer Str. 102/103

The one in Prenzlauerberg: Dunckerstraße 9.

9) No milk today

This cute and cosy little café in the heart of Kreuzberg is fully vegan, fair trade and organic. It has a large choice of breakfast, lunch, hot and cold drinks and cakes. You can also find different gluten free options, the staff are always friendly, the armchairs comfy and the atmosphere super nice.

Where? Fichtestr. 3

When? Tuesday-Sunday from 10am to 7pm.

10) Winterfeldt Schokoladen

This café-shop was a pharmacy in the past and the new owners chose to keep all the furniture, which gives this place a unique charm. The main element here is chocolate! Chocolate, chocolate and chocolate. And coffees, cakes and everything you can expect from a good café. But mainly chocolate. You can drink it in a lot of ways and from different countries. I, for example, had a hot ginger and coconut soy drink with vegan banana bread. You can walk through the shop and discover the awesome collection of chocolate from all over the world and treat yourself or the people you love. This isn’t a vegan place but there are a few options available. We absolutely love the atmosphere. The prices aren’t expensive, the drinks delicious and the location really beautiful. The perfect place to spend a comforting afternoon hidden from the cold weather of Berlin.

Where? Goltzstraße 23

When? Mo-Sa 9pm-8pm and Sunday 12pm-7pm

Places to eat in Berlin : our top 10

A good place for us is more than just having good food, it’s also about the feeling you leave with. The smile the waiter gave you. The love you found in every corner of the location. The crumbles of tasty food you still have on the corner of your mouth. The smell of creative and ethical food that follows you when you close the door. Berlin has a lot of places like that and we are gonna tell you which ones are our favorite.

1) Place to take

After a huge deception this first place is to take! We would be happy to hear all your recommendations 😉

2) Con tho

Warning! Amazing restaurant! Well to be honest our first time there was a very particular day for us, very emotional and an important day in our relationship. So it could be biased to say it was fantastic… BUT we went there again, and again, without any particular reason and felt the same each time. In Con tho you first notice that the menu is extremely interesting and more than affordable. At this point we thought it was too good (or too cheap) to be true. But then the meals came. We suddenly felt like we were in a fancy expensive restaurant. It looked just amazing. And the taste? Even better! Each starter we ordered was tasty, fresh and creative. You should definitely give it a try!

3) Seoul Kitchen

I don’t know about you but we LOVE Korean Food! The idea of a good bibimbap makes us so excited. Every single time. So here is one of our favorite Korean restaurant in Berlin : Seoul Kitchen.

Located in the heart of Friedrichshain and a few meters from the vegan mall it is a strategic place to visit during your stay in Berlin. Take a seat, make yourself comfortable and ask for a tofu bibimbap without egg. When your meal arrives : relax and enjoy the crackling of the hot pan while observing the vitality of the Warschauer Street through the window. The friendliness of the staff makes the atmosphere even better. They also have Japanese food so if you have space for a starter (and you should) try their avocado maki : out of this world.

4) Hummus and friends

It’s crazy how every single place on this list reminds me of all the dates Mimi and I had together. Each one corresponds to a particular moment of our relationship, all so special.. But that’s another story! This restaurant has „hummus“ in it’s name, do I need to say more? ? Traditional hummus, roasted cauliflower, baked eggplant, good wine, nice atmosphere… Convinced?

5) Markhalle neun : street food Tuesday

Once a week the Markhalle neun in Kreuzberg host a great street food market with a lot of different stands from all over the world. You can find a lot of different plant based options and it is difficult to choose one unique meal. Our strategy: go around the market and make a list of our favorite. Then we’ll pick the three best and share all of them with each other. And then we’ll select one or two desserts. With all these flavors you always go home with the feeling you just had a world tour through your mouth!

6) Valladares

What a cute vegan place! Super nice employees, nice atmosphere and delicious meals. What more could we ask for? We really liked the chili sin carne and the Tarte flambée. You can also find pulled jackfruit burger, lasagnes and burritos,… The back area is like a grandma’s living room with comfy armchairs so you can enjoy a hot drink while reading a good book on a rainy afternoon. Need one more reason to go there? They have a cute delicatessen shop with good products for fair prices.

7) Jivamukti Canteen

We found this place by accident and love it every time we have visited! The atmosphere is relaxing, the location (hidden in a backyard) is beautiful. What can you get there? A lot of healthy smoothies and juices, awesome sandwiches, delicious hot drinks, raw desserts, sugar free desserts, soups and much more! The perfect secret place to have a cozy healthy moment in Berlin!

8) Let it be

Let it be is a cozy vegan restaurant you can find near to the Sonnenallee, in the area of Neukölln. The perfect place to eat delicious crepes & burgers and enjoy your time with friends & good beer! The staff are super friendly, the atmosphere warm and the location creative. Give it a go!

9) Neni/Monkey bar

This beautiful restaurant located on a rooftop has a colorful Middle Eastern menu with some delicious vegan dishes. You can order some Lebanese and Syrian specialities like fresh falafels with mint and tahin, smoked eggplant purée with pita bread, oven roasted bell pepper, nuts and pomegranate syrup, three different types of hummus, chickpea salat,… Sounds good right? The view of the city you have from the 10th floor is really beautiful and makes your time there even more special. Top Tip: go in the evening when the sky is dark and the lights of the West City are on.

10) 1990

1990 is a Vietnamese vegan place next to the Boxhagenerplatz, in the heart of Friedrichshain. On the menu you can find a lot of starters to share with your date, friends or with yourself…sharing is not always caring, right? The food and presentation are really good, the staff kind and thoughtful.

Berlin green market : the vegan paradise

If you weren’t sure til now that Berlin is the vegan paradise: we officially confirm that all the rumors were true. You can find a ton of restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, supermarkets and even… vegan markets in the capital! Indeed, every three months you can visit the awesome green market and enjoy a mix of street food, design, beauty products, live-music, cook shows…

Every market honors a season and one of our favorites is the winter market! What can you expect to see there? Christmas decorations and treats and comfort street food. There are also handmade present ideas, fashion stall and all of it fair trade and cruelty free. That, for us, is the perfect occasion to discover ethical products. A great way to try new food and to meet all the different owners of brands and restaurants in Berlin.

When? Every three months

Where? The location changes often , but the most recent is the Funkhaus, Nalepastraße 18

How much? 4 Euro and free for children under 12 y/o
